I'm not moving

Oh, fandom. Flailing on one end, flailing on the other end. I'm getting more and more disgusted with TFN again (seriously, the Tang thread has become 'Does Dunc Need To Smack A Fangirl' central) and now Livejournal. (The former even bled through to CJ.)

Are you writing or drawing underage porn? No? Then you have little reason to worry. Now, I don't advocate ignoring this latest mess but stop running around like chickens with your heads cut off.

6A is being dumb as usual (seriously, removing the strikethrough? LOL DEFENSIVE.) but that's par for the course. They'll be scrambling through this the same way they did last time. At least this time it was actual porn. They're learning!

In any case I'm not feeling particularly threatened, and since a whole lot of nothing happened to my friendslist after all the Strikethrough hand-wringing I'm not much worried about you folks, either.

I have a Journalfen account, but no GJ or IJ. If there is a true mass exodus, I might join. But at the moment? I'm not really feeling the need, and from what I've seen of GreatestJournal it's kinda crap.

In any case - Don't think it's fandom they're trying to 'chase away.' It's kiddie porn. The two are not mutually exclusive.

I realize this might prove to be an unpopular statement. I realize I might lose friends over it. But I am sick to death of this 'they're all out to get us' shit. 6A isn't stupid - paranoid, but not stupid. I hope it'll all even out in the end. But I am totally and completely unwilling to join in the Chicken Little mentality.

ETA: HA HA HA FAIL.

The only advantage to GJ = 2000 free userpics. Love the userpics.

Plus ads. I have an adblocker and a perm account and I'm rarely not logged into LJ, but still.

I know JF is a few upgrades behind LJ. Not sure about GJ, but I like it here.

It would take very little to move me to GJ- mostly, a good mass exodus of friends would do it. Because the userpics? Faboo.

I'm not really into kiddy action, so I can't see getting angry or leaving.

I mean, it would have to be a pretty fucking big exodus.

It would require a parting of the Red Sea. What BNF shall lead us to the promised land?

Watching how badly 6A/LJ handles things (did they really not ask whether the characters were of age before deleting? I hope they're not still that inept) reminds me that I should make emergency exit plans and backups of things I want to save, the same way I should check where the nearest exit is on the plane. It probably won't crash while I'm in it, but it's better to be prepared. This way, if something does go horribly wrong - everyone leaving, fanfic being declared tortious and LJ deleting for it, asteroids striking the LJ servers, whatever - I won't have to do as much scrambling.

But for now, I'm probably in more danger from fans than anyone else for the drabbles where I killed Mara and wrote Jacen out of existence for a lark.

It's porn based on a kids book. 'Of age' is kind of a moot point in that case, really.

I can understand being careful. It's all the screeching and victim complexi I'm taking issue with.

There's another mess going on? I swear, I never notice these things until someone actually smacks me upside the head with them. If everyone does go somewhere else, I hope someone mentions it to me, or I'll be looking at my f-list and wondering why everyone's too busy to update. If it doesn't come to that, I'll just be over here in my happy oblivious little corner. :p

It effects some parts of fandom more than others... Though last time it was during C4. :D

I agree a large part of fandom is overreacting and somehow thinking you're entitled to artistic freedom on a personal website, but what I'm not cool with is people (not saying you) who are acting like twats because I want some answers to my questions about how the rules work from people I'm giving money to. I don't even mind them going "please make all your sexual stories/art feature adults over aged 18," so long as they said that was okay, rather than pretending they'll debate the artistic merit over with their "staff," who probably haven't seen the inside of an English class since they left their freshman year of college. I'm not concerned for myself, since kiddie porn isn't my thing, either, and anything even remotely questionable is being deleted off my LJ as we speak. I just want to know.

(Reposted for clarification purposes.)

They do need to be more clear, but legalese and clear rules don't mix well, I guess.

Too many lawyers involved?

Quite possibly. But I really do think that artistic or "literary merit" they'll review is bullshit. If fiction or art depicting anyone under 18 in a graphic sexual situation is not cool, how hard is it to say so?

Maybe they need to borrow the Evil Overlord's five-year-old-child adviser to practice communicating clearly.

....wha?

I particularly liked the German who posted about how there was a law in some of the United States that outlawed deflowering virgins. WTF?

Oooh... I notice that "not mutually exclusive." is bolded. Did that user post too much pr0n?? ;P

TO be honest, I don't know. Never heard of either user before this. But people are acting like it's an attack on all of fandom, not just a part of it. Like there aren't enough people who think all fanfic is porn.

Oy. I've already been... not quite "pissed", that's too heartfelt a word, but perhaps deeply *tired of* seeing pr0n that has only nominal connections to the fanbase it's supposed to be part of. I have nothing against pr0n for its own sake, but jeebus! when there's just screen after screen of identically generic-looking figures engaged in random frolics, but they just happen to be labelled with the names of characters from the source medium, and could be randomly relabelled with other names from anywhere else without substantially changing the dramatic impact... what exactly is the fannish point in the first place?

(This has especially been irking me about HP stuff, though perhaps that's cimply because I've been looking at stuff in that fanbase more than others and it's just as bad everywhere else... though I'd expect that at least in media with visual canon, such as movies and comics, there's at least *some* minimum standard of similar appearance that purely textual media may not have.)

THANK YOU! I totally agree. 6A is a business, of course they are going to flail and cover their ass. Especially with the "Ban MySpace" people running around. I hate censorship, but I also think if you really feel the need to create something that's pornographic (I didn't see the picture, but someone described it to me) you might want to post it elsewhere.

this whole things melts my brain. I'm not into fan fic or anything like that, and I really don't notice it that much. But the picture that caused the whole stir sounds like someone trying to cause trouble. How could they post something so blatant and not expect LJ to freak out?

Luckily, the flailage on my flist has been minimal.

...word.

I've already had people start the "first they came for the..." crap with me for saying this, but honestly: I'm not going to leave because they're banning (and are they even?) something I don't care about anyway.

I like my current lease. And I have a hard time taking people seriously when they take a song from a crappy movie and use it as a rallying cry as if The Powers That Be are ZOMG! Trying to Destroy All of Fandom! Because they're not. Seriously.

Just looking at the Lit boards on TFN tends to give me headache, so I try to abstain these days. And the level of histrionics over the LJ thing. *blinks* Um, really, if you write and/or draw underage porn, what do you expect?

Seriously, what is it with HP? Thank god that while SW might be for kids, there are relatively few kids in it.

Though another lovely thing TFN has been doing is to wonder when Ben Skywalker is gonna get it on. He's fourteen. Thankfully the mods do quash that.

I guess this means I'm going to have to scrap my plans for a twelve-part Jurassic Park child incest masterpiece. Why, LiveJournal, why? Now I'll need to replace all the juicy Tim/Lex lovin' with a plot or something. How could you?

I'm not going anywhere unless they ban fanworks as copyright violation, at which time leaving will be a moot point as LJ would be empty anyway.

I'll have to remember to check your journal every time I see someone's head explode. It's good to know Teh Drahma isn't everywhere.

Personally, I'm on LJ because my friends are here. It's the flist function that makes the whole thing work, so what's the point of going elsewhere unless everyone else goes there, too?

The specs

I know a lot of random stuff about Star Wars. I read a lot of books. I kind of hate Facebook, but I love Twitter and Tumblr.

I am online far, far too much.

(I used to make icons a lot.)
